About 7,330 paralegals are employed in Massachusetts, with over 6,040 of these professionals working in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metropolitan area.1 It can take as little as two years to complete a paralegal degree at one of the numerous Massachusetts paralegal schools. Becoming a paralegal in Massachusetts means joining one of the fastest-growing career areas in the state.

How to Become a Paralegal in Massachusetts

There are a variety of programs available at Massachusetts paralegal schools, including two-year associate degrees and four-year bachelor’s degrees. There are also certificate programs available for those who have college and/ or work experience. The state prohibits paralegals from giving legal advice to clients and mandates that they work under the supervision of a licensed attorney. Prospective paralegals in Maryland may choose to pursue national certification after completing a paralegal degree, which increases candidates’ competitiveness in the job market.

Paralegal Quote: “I was told to find an area of the law that I enjoyed and stick with it. Do not try and be a jack of all trades and master of none. Find something, do it, get great at it.”

Shawn Hartman, Chair of Probates/Estate at the Massachusetts Paralegal Association

Student Review: “UMass Amherst has a fairly decent legal studies program. It’s good in its faculty and integrity, but offers little sense of community or any small class sizes. Even as an older student, my classes are around 30-40 people, which for me, feels big. It’s reading intense and can honestly be kind of boring. I noticed a definite liberal bias and a certain spin on certain issues by particular professors. Overall it’s a challenging program and would prepare someone well for law school or any job in that service. I would suggest taking a science major at UMass- much better buildings, class sizes, and creativity.” – Student at University of Massachusetts Amherst
