Police Quote: Do not ever stop learning (don’t become stale in accomplishing your job duties). The world has changed overnight on how business is conducted, how people communicate, and, most important, how people learn. A good foundation in the criminal justice system is a prerequisite for a career in law enforcement, but one needs to bring other knowledge to the department. Public administration, organizational behavior, computer science, political science, mathematics, English, psychology, etc. are used every day in modern policing. -John Standish, Board Member of the California Peace Officers Association

California Criminal Justice Careers

There is high demand for skilled criminal justice graduates in California, which is the most populous state in the country and the eighth-largest economy in the world. California is in the top five highest-paying states in the country for the average annual wage of protective service professionals, at $53,970.17 California Highway Patrol officers are among the highest paid in the US, earning a minimum base salary of $65,185 upon completion of the Academy, with bachelor’s degree holders earning an additional 5% as an education differential.18

California’s prisons hold approximately 158,000 people, not including people in county jails or federal or military prisons located in California. State and local education requirements for prison guards vary from a high school diploma to an associate’s degree, while the Federal Bureau of Prisons considers education as part of the hiring process. California shares a long and storied border with Mexico which includes the Tijuana border crossing, the world’s busiest; this provides homeland security-related career opportunities such as border patrol and immigration and customs enforcement agents. California additionally hosts a number of military bases, national parks and forests, and other federal installations, all of which require the services of criminal justice graduates.

There are also numerous police departments in California that are consistently hiring qualified officers. The Los Angeles Police Department offers higher starting salaries to college graduates, who may also be viewed as more competitive in the application process. Many smaller police departments in California require applicants to have at least some college education. The Campbell Police Department and the San Jose Police Department both require 40 semester hours of college credit from police trainees. Many other police departments offer increased starting salaries for those who hold an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.

The Mercatus Center, a conservative think tank, analyzed and rated the long-term solvency of state governments. After reviewing the state’s budgeting process, tax collections, and funding of pensions, it ranked California 44th in the nation.17 This indicates that new hires will want to pay attention to California’s ability to fund its ongoing pension obligations.

Student Review: “The criminal justice program at CBU is a great program for people who have a passion to serve in their communities. The program itself is designed to challenge the students and uses real-life case studies to prepare students for a successful career. The professors are friendly, easy to approach, and exercise a lot of flexibility as they are available both in and out of the office to help students with any questions. As a student who lived on the main campus, I would say that the environment is learning-friendly, and allows you to create long-term professional relationships. Student Review: “I absolutely enjoyed program. My first class was a criminal behavior class, and we studied psychological factors in the minds of serial killers and criminals as well as their background and early life. It was really eye-opening to realize that a lot of criminals come from good homes and have no reasons other than mental illness or psychological problems that cause them to behave the way they do. I felt that really helped me a lot to understand the way criminals act and feel while and would help a lot in the career because you can understand them better. My professor was amazing, and he was always there to answer questions or help with any portions that we were stuck on. I never felt that I could not approach him if needed. I don’t feel anything should be changed. It was a really cool class and held my attention. And I loved getting to learn the psychological aspect to it as well.” -Student at Hartnell College

Student Review: “UCI’s criminology, law, and society program is superb in California. I think we have the most distinctive program all over the state for my department’s integration of multiple perspectives (law, sociology, criminology, cognitive psychology, public policy, etc) in studying the social-legal system. The academic backgrounds of faculty members of this program are really diverse. We have senior authorities such as E. Loftus (a National Academy of Science member) to teach undergraduate courses every year. I enjoyed her insightful class discussions which makes dull learning materials become super interesting through analogy. The program also emphasizes the general education on social science. The department has a strong connection with southern California law industry and public service sectors. One problem is the living expense is very high here (especially the rent).” -Oliver W., student at University of California, Irvine

Bachelor of Science | Criminal Justice

Student Review: “Academically the Criminal Justice program that I was in was a great experience. We learned so much about the law and how police and justice system tries to protect us and the community. The professors always wanted us to make sure we learned the correct information, including the way the justice works in courts and sentencing for criminals. I liked how our professor included slang words and taught us about how gangs act since our professor was a retired Sheriff. He explained his experiences as a law enforcement officer and the dangers and emotional effect it has on a person. The only thing I disliked was we never did any activities in class, we mainly had lectures every class and then quizzes.” – Student at California Lutheran University

California State Polytechnic University – Pomona (Pomona)
Bachelor of Arts | Sociology: Criminology
Minor | Criminal Justice
Minor | Nonviolence Studies

Student Review: “In general, the study of criminology at Cal Poly Pomona is generally rigorous, challenging and practical. Since Cal Pol is a “Polytechnic” school we do a lot of “hands-on” learning and I think its a great alternative to boring lectures. We are in the labs and in group projects often and the down side of this is that there are very few opportunities to discuss the textbook content with the class and professor. We have to go to the professor’s office hours if we have any questions concerning the text. Despite this setback, the practicality and the ability to apply what we just learned is just amazing. Many of my colleagues test their abilities and aptitude in the many projects we have. In the end, Poly Pomona’s criminal justice system is not the best but it is above average in the Cal State system.” -Cristian G., student at California State Polytechnic University – Pomona

Student Review: “My experience in the criminal justice program at Chico State was overall a good one. I had experienced and knowledgeable professors who were approachable and challenging. The expected us to do our best and were constantly relating our classroom experiences to things we would face in the ‘real world.’ Chico State offered many different classes to fulfill requirements and I was able to take classes that interested me and still allowed me to attain my degree. After I graduated I was able to get a job working in the social service field but still working within the criminal justice system. In my time in this position I have learned how social services agencies and law enforcement agencies interact, the experience has been extremely valuable. Overall getting my degree in criminal justice has served me well and was worth the investment.” -Quinn H., student at California State University, Chico

The professors gave insightful lectures that were never boring. Case studies used real examples that could be linked to everyday scenarios. The guest speakers were captivating and the on-site internship program is excellent in preparing you for a real career in law enforcement. Student Review: “Humboldt State University is a very beautiful campus. The classes I’m taking are remedial English and Math. I’m also taking “Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality” which is a requirement for all Educational Opportunity Program students. I’m planning on majoring in criminology and justice studies. My school has a 4 year plan which will help me get my BA in criminology.” -Kimberly M., student at Humboldt State University

Student Review: “The Criminal Justice program at LACC was a great experience, not the best but very solid. The classes in Criminal justice department were always full and it was hard for me to get classes. I was delayed a whole year because of this. I wish there would have been more funding towards this department. Still, the teachers in the department were some of the best I’ve ever had, this includes classes from other departments. I love learning about crime and how the law handles these crimes. In one class I was able to go all the way to the Mexican border to learn about border patrol and their duties. This was a great experience since I made a lot of connections that could land me a job later in life. Overall I would recommend someone to LACC’s Criminal Justice program.” -Student at Los Angeles Community College
