How to Become a Paralegal in Louisiana

Louisiana, like most states, does not require a certain amount of education or experience to become a paralegal; however, the Louisiana State Paralegal Association has an optional exam for paralegals, based on the National Association of Legal Assistant credentialing process. This certificate allows employers to know that a candidate possesses a minimum amount of skills and experience. The certificate is also designed to set paralegals apart from other paraprofessionals.

Louisiana Paralegal Salary and Job Outlook

Louisiana saw a 6.3% increase in the Business and Professional Services Sector, which includes legal services, from 2012 to 2013.2 This is much higher than the national growth of 3.5% during the same time period.2 Projections Central predicts that the paralegal profession in Louisiana will grow 21.5% by 2022, which is higher than the 17% projection for the nation during that same time.3,1 With this information, and the fact that the average annual salary for a paralegal in Louisiana is $42,210, a well-qualified paralegal can be relatively confident that they can find suitable employment in Louisiana.1

ABA-Approved Paralegal Schools in Louisiana

Louisiana has three schools that are currently approved by the American Bar Association. These include:

  • Herzig University in Kenner, LA offers a Bachelor of Science in legal studies and an Associate of Science in legal assisting/paralegal.
  • Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA offers a non-credit certificate.
  • Tulane University in New Orleans, LA offers a Bachelor of Arts, an Associate of Arts, and a post-baccalaureate certificate in paralegal studies.

Profiles of Well-Known Schools in Louisiana

Tulane University: Three American Bar Association approved Paralegal Studies programs are offered by Tulane University’s School of Continuing Studies: the Bachelor of Arts, the Associate of Arts, and the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate. This program is the oldest ABA approved paralegal course of study in the Gulf Coast region, having obtained that status in 1981. The School of Continuing Studies also has a Paralegal Studies Minor, which supplements an existing major well, but does not meet ABA standards. Over two dozen faculty, many of which are practicing attorneys, actively teach Paralegal Studies courses. All students, regardless of degree structure, must complete Introduction to Paralegal Studies, Legal Research, Legal Writing, and Litigation I.
