Despite a population growth of more than a million statewide in the last decade, New York’s crime rate has fallen by 28%, with even greater decline in NYC. There are 70 correctional facilities in the state, and correction officers account for most jobs with the NY State Department of Correctional Services. These positions require completion of a year-long training program including attendance at the Correctional Services Training Academy which counts as up to 16 college credits.

New York’s State Police force includes more than 4,850 sworn members working in divisions including Special Operations Response Team, Canine Patrol, SCUBA, Narcotics Enforcement, Accident Reconstruction, and Firearms Tracing Unit. Candidates for NY State Trooper positions must complete 60 college credits in an accredited program.

Labor market statistics project a 6% job growth in the state during the decade from 2006 to 2016, representing nearly 278,000 annual openings. The occupational outlook is especially promising for criminal justice careers as paralegal & legal assistants, private detectives & investigators, and forensic science technicians where employment growth is projected at 16, 14, and 22% respectively. With the dramatic reduction in the state’s crime rate, correctional officers will actually experience a 2% reduction in jobs over that period, yet there will still be 870 openings each year for this occupation.

New York is among the top-paying states for criminal justice careers. According to the Bureaus of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for all protective service occupations in the state – totaling 263,500 workers – is over $45,000. This includes bailiffs who earn a median of almost $49,000 and transit & railroad police at almost $53,000, second highest pay among all states for these positions. For those in legal occupations which statewide total almost 109,000 workers, the median yearly wage is $114,000+. This includes a median of $58,000 for paralegals & legal assistants – second only to Washington, DC for this occupation in terms of both pay and concentration of jobs.

New York’s Criminal Justice Employment Outlook

As of late Spring 2010, New York’s unemployment has stabilized at 8.6% after slightly more shallow declines than the overall national average (odd but true despite all the press attention on Wall Street), and employment is slowly growing back toward prior peak employment levels by Fall 2012. Government related employment, which is a good proxy for New York criminal justice jobs, has good prospects with prior peak employment levels reached by December 2012. New York’s Department of Labor site shows strong prospects are noted for Police and Sheriff Patrol (1840 annual openings / 88% of individuals in these positions report having some college or a bachelor’s degrees), Correctional Officers (870 annual openings / 60% of individuals in these positions report having some college or a bachelor’s degree), Detectives and Investigators (340 annual openings), Security Guards (3100 annual openings) and Paralegals (760 annual openings / 88% of individuals in these positions report some college or a bachelor’s degree). The same site reports that there was job creation in the government sector of 2500 jobs in March, which is interesting given New York’s budget challenges. According to the Sunshine Review, New York is facing a dramatic budget shortfall in 2010. Among many efforts, one item used to stem this gap is to force government employees wanting to collect pensions from 55 to 62 years old. That will mean current employees working longer and limiting opportunities on the margin.
