Police Quote: Do not ever stop learning (don’t become stale in accomplishing your job duties). The world has changed overnight on how business is conducted, how people communicate, and, most important, how people learn. A good foundation in the criminal justice system is a prerequisite for a career in law enforcement, but one needs to bring other knowledge to the department. Public administration, organizational behavior, computer science, political science, mathematics, English, psychology, etc. are used every day in modern policing. -John Standish, Board Member of the California Peace Officers Association

California is the most populous state in the country and the eighth largest economy in the world, ahead of Russia, India, and Mexico. Criminal justice professionals in California has been well-represented in Hollywood with movies like LA Confidential, The Rock (Alcatraz), Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison Blues (California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation), Quincy (Los Angeles Coroner’s Department), Dirty Harry (San Francisco Police Department), and Speed (Los Angeles Police Department). It is also home to a long and storied border with Mexico which includes the Tijuana border crossing, the world’s busiest. California’s federal prisons have hosted some of the most famous criminals in modern history including Michael Milken, Heidi Fleiss, Ivan Boesky, and H.R. Haldeman. California is also home to a number of military bases, national parks and forests, and other federal installations, all of which require the services of criminal justice graduates.

Student Review: “The criminal Justice program at CBU is a great program for people who have a passion to serve in their communities. The program itself is designed to challenge the students and uses real-life case studies to prepare students for a successful career. The professors are friendly, easy to approach, and exercise a lot of flexibility as they are available both in and out of office to help students with any questions. As a student who lived on the main campus, I would say that the environment is learning-friendly, and allows you to create long-term professional relationships. Various opportunities are provided, where students can attend career workshops, mock interviews with hiring companies, and different resume workshops to enhance the success of students.” – Student at California Baptist University

Student Review: “In general, the study of criminology at Cal Poly Pomona is generally rigorous, challenging and practical. Since Cal Pol is a “Polytechnic” school we do a lot of “hands-on” learning and I think its a great alternative to boring lectures. We are in the labs and in group projects often and the down side of this is that there are very few opportunities to discuss the textbook content with the class and professor. We have to go to the professor’s office hours if we have any questions concerning the text. Despite this setback, the practicality and the ability to apply what we just learned is just amazing. Many of my colleagues test their abilities and aptitude in the many projects we have. In the end Poly Pomona’s criminal justice system is not the best but it is above average in the Cal State system.” -Cristian G., student at California State Polytechnic University – Pomona

Student Review: “My experience in the criminal justice program at Chico State was overall a good one. I had experienced and knowledgeable professors who were approachable and challenging. The expected us to do our best and were constantly relating our classroom experiences to things we would face in the ‘real world.’ Chico State offered many different classes to fulfill requirements and I was able to take classes that interested me and still allowed me to attain my degree. After I graduated I was able to get a job working in the social service field but still working within the criminal justice system. In my time in this position I have learned how social services agencies and law enforcement agencies interact, the experience has been extremely valuable. Overall getting my degree in criminal justice has served me well and was worth the investment.” -Quinn H., student at California State University, Chico

The professors gave insightful lectures that were never boring. Case studies used real examples that could be linked to everyday scenarios. Student Review: “When I started the criminology program I was excited to learn that the major was 5th best in the United States for graduate school. I knew from that the classes will be highly informative and professors will be well trained in what they teach. In the course catalogue the program offers a wide variety of interesting classes that I wanted to take. Unfortunately, a lot of those classes that I wanted were not offered during the time I was there. I was hoping the program would offer more hand on experience classes, instead of just reading different theories in a book. Each class got highly repetitive which was good and bad. It was beneficial as I would not lose the information after the class was over, but bad because it became boring to sit through lectures. My experience was not all bad though. A lot of my professors were really entertaining and had a lot of knowledge in the field. Some professors had guest lecturers that had careers in law enforcement and they shared their insights into it. My dream job is to be a juvenile probation officer. I feel well prepared after graduating from UCI.” -Danielle A., student at University of California, Irvine

Student Review: “UCI’s criminology, law, and society program is superb in California. I think we have the most distinctive program all over the state for my department’s integration of multiple perspectives (law, sociology, criminology, cognitive psychology, public policy, etc) in studying the social-legal system. The academic backgrounds of faculty members of this program are really diverse. We have senior authorities such as E. Loftus (a National Academy of Science member) to teach undergraduate course every year. I enjoyed her insightful class discussions which makes dull learning materials become super interesting through analogy. The program also emphasizes the general education on social science. The department has strong connection with southern California law industry and public service sectors. One problem is the living expense is very high here (especially the rent).” -Oliver W., student at University of California, Irvine
