How to Become a Tucson, Arizona Police Officer

To become a Tucson police officer, candidates must first meet the requirements outlined below and submit an online application. Qualified applicants may be contacted to begin the extensive evaluation process, which includes a written exam, a physical fitness test, a personal interview with an oral board, a polygraph exam, a psychological evaluation, and a thorough background investigation. Recruits must complete 21 weeks of police academy training at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center followed by an additional 19 weeks of field training, after which time officers who perform well may be hired permanently.

Tucson police officers are expected to be adept at managing conflict, put community members first, and protect and provide assistance to the Tucson community. All police officers must be well-versed in criminal law, crime prevention, patrol tactics and procedures, and crime scene management. New police officers with the Tucson Police Department typically begin their careers in patrol assignments. Officers must complete three years of service before becoming eligible to apply for special assignments such as detective work and must complete five years of service to be eligible for promotion to the supervisory ranks.

Tucson Police Officer Training, Prerequisites, and Education Requirements

To be eligible for employment with the Tucson Police Department, applicants must be at least 21 years old and a citizen of the United States, have earned a high school diploma or GED, and have a record that is clear of felony convictions. Candidates must also have a driver’s license with two years of driving experience. Candidates will be required to undergo a thorough examination process, including written and physical exams as well as a psychological evaluation, before being offered a position.

Selected candidates will train at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Training Center for 16 weeks, completing academic work as well as physical conditioning. Following successful completion of the police academy, recruits will complete a five-week post-basic academy followed by field training, which is broken into four phases over a span of 19 weeks.
