How to Become a Boston, MA Police Officer
In order to become a police officer in Boston, Massachusetts, candidates must meet certain base qualifications. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-32, a US Citizen and live in the city of Boston. A high school diploma or GED is required and all applicants must be licensed to drive in Massachusetts. Each applicant must meet physical fitness standards. The entire application process is quite involved and can be broken into three general parts: part one includes an orientation session, interview session, and background investigation. Part two of the process includes drug testing, psychological screening, and medical screening. Part three is the Physical Ability Test (PAT test). If a recruit makes it through all these stages successfully and a position is available, they will be invited to attend a new hire orientation session.

Boston police officers are among the highest paid in the nation. The average salary for a police officer in Boston for 2002 was $78,906.00. Recruits start at an annual salary of $49,174. After graduation from the Academy salaries increase significantly as officers are eligible to work overtime and paid detail. Higher education will result in pay bonuses. An additional 10% of base salary is paid to those with an associate’s degree, 20% for those with a bachelor’s degree and 25% for those with a master’s or law degree.
